Post subject:  Leaky Gut Causing CBP?

I have learnt a lot from perusing this site; I'm grateful to the administrators and contributors.

My prostatitis symptoms started 12 months ago.

A very recent semen culture shows 'Heavy Growth of Enteroccocus faecalis'.

I'm pondering whether a 'leaky gut' is at the core of my problem.
I hope to discuss this with a urologist very soon and will be happy to feed back his thoughts.

In advance of that meeting I would really appreciate your ideas/thoughts on:

1. If the gut can leak, could this be the cause of EF in the prostate?

2. If yes, is it most likely through bloodstream? I have read that blood supply to the prostate is poor.

3. Or is it possible to transfer EF direct through the rectum wall into the prostate (long periods of constipation)?

4. Anything else?

I suspect that I may have a leaky gut as I've been taking 1000mg of Naproxen daily for the last 20 years together with Tramadol and Codeine (both causing constipation). This is a layman's deduction since I do not have any scientific training.

With many thanks in advance for your contributions.

#3 is probable for me. Enterotoxins, or allergic proteins in fecal matter, (one or the other, maybe both) further aggravating the prostatitis condition. When I am constipated, or eat foods I am allergic to, prostatitis becomes worse.

Food allergies are a sign of leaky gut, from what I've read.

Thank you Inflamed - very helpful, as ever.

1. Has anyone had a test for Leaky Gut?

2. Has anyone consulted a 'Functional Medicine' Dr or Specialist?

Have a good weekend gentlemen.

1. No. Do you know what it involves? What the test is?

2. No, but I'm considering it. I've only gone to a gastroenterologist, but not for leaky gut. Is there another specialist who would have expertise about it?

Have you ever gone to a nephrologist?

Hi Presto

Thank you for your reply.

1. Dr Google tells me:

Lactulose and mannitol testing evaluates nutrient absorption. After an ingestion period the levels are tested in a urine sample, in order to determine how much of these sugars are permeating through the intestinal wall. It shows what is getting through the barrier. Levels can be compared if repeating the test in order to assess healing progress.

A superior option is a test like the Cyrex Intestinal Antigenic Permeability Screen. It assesses damage to gut barrier and proteins. Included is zonulin testing, as previously mentioned, zonulin increases intestinal permeability, so testing for it can be a useful biomarker. This test can flag up gut wall problems ahead of a decline in absorption function, so enabling treatment to begin sooner.
Other testing helps to build up the full picture, such as testing for food sensitivities, bacterial dysbiosis and nutritional deficiencies.

2. I do not know if other specialists have expertise. I have not consulted a FMD. They seem thin on the ground in the UK. Where are you?

3. Not consulted a nephrologist. Curious as to why you ask? I do have kidney stones - no action currently being discussed - should there be?

Well, it doesn't sound accurate, the gut leak test I mean. But it could show something.

One reason I ask is because my physical therapist suggested I go to a nephrologist, and I was wondering whether you had experience with consulting one. Do you know how large the kidney stones are?

An extract of the sonographer's report:

'Two echogenic foci in the middle and lower pole of left kidney suggesting non obstructive renal calculi. These measure 6mm and 5mm size.

No hydronephosis.

Simple cortical cyst of 3cm in the upper pole of right kidney'.

I have not received any explanation; I hadn't really thought about it tbh. It's my prostate that keeps me awake at night.

Does it mean anything to anyone?

Is there a connection with CBP?

You can get the leaky gut test in the UK from medichecks.

I also have Enterococcus Faecalis, its very difficult to get rid of, where are you based?

I would take a very good probiotic such as BioCare this has help my gut issues alot after long course of antiobiotics.

Yeah most of us have stomach problems from all the repeated antibiotic courses. Any time im constipated i feel worse it puts pressure on that bladder and prostate. You got to make sure you get your yeast in check. Yeast will settle in after antibiotic courses. You may have killed the bacteria but the fungus has settled in now and its causing the new symptoms.
