Several studies have suggested a relationship between prostatitis and prostate cancer. Several theories exist as to why prostatitis may lead to prostate cancer.

Theories exist that determining the cause of prostatitis might lead to a preventative vaccine for prostate cancer.

In addition, prostate cancer patients frequently, if not always, have prostatitis in their prostates microscopically.

In some men, a diagnosis of prostatitis is the first clue that prostate cancer is present.

Prostatitis and prostate cancer certainly have overlapping symptems at the beginning. The foundation gets many questions about how high your PSA reading can get from prostatitis. Many have already had lots of tests and even biopsies taken from the prostate which were all negative.

I am 58 and have a PSA that routinely runs at 1.0 or less. Is that a good indication?

Urologist Ronald Wheeler is a proponent that a man's PSA level should be less than 1.0 nanograms/millimeter. In his view, and I tend to agree, if the PSA is over 1.0 ng/ml the man has prostatitis, BPH, or prostate cancer. It's likely one of those three things is raising the PSA. You don't see PSA levels over 1.0 in younger men with healthy prostates.

Keep in mind that there has never been total agreement about PSA use. The doctors themselves have never been of one mind about the procedure.
For most people at the first sign of possible prostate cancer they want it out as fast as possible. A high number PSA is often thought to be a warning of cancer but it can alsos mean prostatitis.

If this is of use:

1) My specialist (a urologist who is a consultant surgeon FRCS) told me that there was no evidence that prostatitis has a causal link with prostate cancer. Have I been misinformed?

2) While I have now been dealing with non-bacterial chronic prostatitis for the last eight months, my PSA reading in February was extremely low. I am a 41 year old man.

I was reading a report recently which claimed that 1 in 6 cancers are caused by infection. With this in mind, it wouldn't appear unreasonable to assume a link between an infection in the prostate and prostate cancer.
