Case Report: Topical Iodine Relieves Groin/Scrotum/Testes Pain

Personal experience - applying Lugol's iodine solution to groin and scrotum daily relieves groin/scrotum/testes pain related to infection connected with bacterial prostatitis. Lugol's iodine is a solution of 4% potassium iodide and 2% elemental iodine. See caution before doing this yourself.

Topically applied iodine is absorbed through the skin. This is why it works to treat infection but it can also cause difficulties. High internal levels of iodine can cause thyroid malfunction and other adverse effects. This is typically seen in burn patients who have a large portion of the body covered with iodine dressings. Nonetheless, if you decide to try this treatment for an extended period I advise monitoring your plasma iodine levels: ... tive/81574

Enhanced Topical Delivery of Non-complexed Molecular Iodine for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Decolonization ... 9_81-6.pdf

The use of an iodine-based disinfectant is attractive, as (a) it is well known that iodophors demonstrate rapid and broad-spectrum bactericidal activity (within 10 -20 seconds) and (b) there is no evidence that bacteria can develop resistance to iodine (Houang et al., 1976; Lanker Klossner et al., 1997) since it reacts rapidly with several functional groups (double-bonds, amino groups and sulphydral groups) which results in simultaneous action against multiple molecular targets to cause death.
Notably, topical iodine compositions offer the potential to provide a prolonged (> 12 h duration)
epidermal antibacterial activity due to a continuous flux or “back diffusion” of absorbed I2 from
treated skin (Gottardi, 1995; McLure and Gordon, 1992). This flux of I2 is proportional to
exposure time and the concentration of I2 applied to the skin

Details Of Use:
I lean back in a reclining chair while sitting on a towel that I do not mind being stained with iodine. I dribble the iodine solution onto groin and scrotum using an eyedropper. I then spread it around evenly using fingers. Glove recommended to minimize unnecessary iodine absorption. It stings on some occasions, particularly the first few times. I do not mind because it feels like a "good hurt". It darkens the areas that is applied to, so if you have an intimate partner it would be in order to explain what you are doing. It took a few days to reach full effect. I am currently pain-free, whereas I used to have discomfort in these areas on regular basis.

Iodine Alternatives:
I do not know that Lugol's formula is necessarily the best choice, it is what I had on hand and it works for me. I think tincture of iodine is a bad idea because it would sting a lot more. Povidone iodine is a possibility - it would not provide as much initial dose but it could provide a more extended time release.
