I think ultrasound is a little more invasive. I had MRI done. Typical routine test. Most of the time they find nothing.

According to Taber’s Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, Ultrasonography means “ Use of Ultrasound to produce an image or photograph of an organ or tissue. Ultrasonic echoes are recorded as they strike tissues of different densities.”

Many patients report having scar tissue or calcifications, some say stones in the prostate.
Ultrasonography is one way of finding them I assume.

Google brought up this information from WebMD. An excellent site

"Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a test that uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to make pictures of organs and structures inside the body. In many cases MRI gives different information about structures in the body than can be seen with an X-ray, ultrasound, or computed tomography (CT) scan. MRI also may show problems that cannot be seen with other imaging methods."
